Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the right to contest particular calls made by the official, following the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
